Since the 1980s the current discussion has distinguished several types of innovations. These types could only rarely be demonstrated. However, they are often used as an argument nevertheless. First and foremost, the distinction between radical and incremental innovations is still popular. On the base of the current discussion this paper ascertains the possibility to make the distinction of radical and incremental innovations empirical robust. This is also a contribution for working out a profound and altogether discriminating concept of innovation. Present paper is also the beginning of an ongoing discussion of further distinctions of innovation.
